In a landmark decision, the Joint Committee of the Senate and House of Representatives on Constitutional Review has unanimously approved the creation of one new state from Nigeria’s South East region.
According to Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who confirmed the development, the move is aimed at promoting justice, equity, and fairness, as the South East remains the only geopolitical zone in Nigeria with five states instead of six like other regions.
Kalu noted that the approval reflects the National Assembly’s commitment to addressing long-standing regional imbalance and ensuring equal representation in Nigeria’s federal structure.
The proposed state’s name and boundaries are expected to be announced after final legislative processes and constitutional ratification.
