Bandits launched a deadly attack on Guto village in Bwari Area Council, Abuja, in the early hours of Thursday, leaving one police officer dead during a fierce gun duel.
According to reports, about 30 armed bandits invaded the border community around 1:10 a.m. in an attempt to abduct residents. Their operation was interrupted when officers of the Bwari Police Division and the IGP Special Intervention Squad (SIS) swiftly responded to distress calls.
A heavy exchange of gunfire ensued as the attackers opened fire on the responding security team. The police repelled the attack, killed two of the bandits, and forced the others to flee into surrounding bushes and rocky areas.
Sadly, one police officer was critically wounded during the confrontation. He was rushed to Bwari General Hospital, where he was confirmed dead.
The FCT Commissioner of Police, Miller Dantawaye, has deployed additional security personnel to the area and ordered a full-scale investigation to track down the fleeing attackers.
The police assured residents that normalcy has been restored in Guto village.
This latest incident adds to rising security concerns in parts of the Federal Capital Territory, especially border communities prone to bandit incursions.
