A five-storey building owned by former Imo State governor Rochas Okorocha collapsed along Ahmadu Bello Way in Abuja around 9 PM on July 1, causing alarm in the area. The building was undergoing renovation at the time of the incident.
Following the collapse, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command quickly secured the site. Eyewitnesses reported that some people might have been trapped inside the building, with two individuals initially pulled from the rubble and taken to the hospital. The rescue operations, however, appeared uncoordinated at the early stages.
The FCT Police Command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, confirmed in a statement that three people were rescued from the collapsed structure. The statement highlighted the prompt response from the Commissioner of Police, FCT, Benneth C. Igweh, and multiple patrol teams who secured the area and facilitated the rescue efforts. The rescued individuals were taken to the hospital for medical treatment.
