The Ministry of Livestock Development, established by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, is designed to address the longstanding and often violent conflicts between herders and farmers, particularly in Benue State and other regions of Nigeria. This new ministry will focus on several key areas:
- Conflict Resolution: It aims to mediate and resolve disputes between herders and farmers to promote peace and stability.
- Policy Formulation: The ministry will develop and implement policies that promote sustainable livestock management and agricultural practices.
- Ranching Development: It will support the creation and management of ranches to replace the practice of open grazing, which has been a major source of conflict.
- Regulation and Oversight: The ministry will establish guidelines and regulations to ensure the orderly and modern management of livestock, ensuring both herders’ and farmers’ interests are protected.
- Sustainable Practices: Promoting sustainable livestock practices to boost productivity while minimizing environmental impact and reducing competition for land resources.
- Economic Development: By improving livestock management, the ministry aims to enhance the economic viability of livestock farming, contributing to the overall economy.
The creation of this ministry was also marked by the launch of the Presidential Committee on Livestock Reforms, indicating a comprehensive approach to tackling the challenges within the sector and fostering a harmonious coexistence between herders and farmers.
