FIFA President Condemns Senegal Players’ Walkout During AFCON Final

Gianni Infantino describes the pitch walkout as unacceptable, says it undermines the integrity of football despite Senegal’s eventual victory.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has condemned the decision by Senegalese players to briefly walk off the pitch during the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, describing the action as unacceptable and harmful to the integrity of football.

The incident occurred during Senegal’s tense AFCON final clash against Morocco after a controversial penalty was awarded to the North African side following a VAR review. Angered by the decision, several Senegal players and members of the technical crew reportedly abandoned the pitch in protest, leading to a temporary stoppage of play.

Despite the disruption, Senegal later returned to the field and went on to secure victory in extra time after Morocco missed the penalty. However, Infantino stressed that protests against refereeing decisions must be handled within the Laws of the Game, noting that walking off the pitch sets a poor example and undermines respect for match officials.

The FIFA president also condemned reports of unrest and disorder around the stadium, insisting that violence has no place in football. He urged players, officials and fans to uphold the principles of fair play, discipline and respect, especially during high-profile tournaments.

The Confederation of African Football is expected to review the incident, with possible disciplinary measures against those involved. Senegal’s camp has since expressed regret over the walkout, admitting that emotions ran high during the dramatic final, even as debates continue over officiating standards and the use of VAR in African football.
