Move Raises Number of Registered Political Parties in Nigeria to 21

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has registered two new political parties, further expanding Nigeria’s political space ahead of the 2027 general elections.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, announced the development during a meeting with leaders of registered political parties at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja. He explained that the registration followed constitutional provisions and compliance with relevant electoral laws.

The newly registered parties are the Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). According to INEC, one of the parties met all statutory requirements for registration, while the other was registered in obedience to a Federal High Court judgment directing the commission to do so.

With the addition of the two parties, the total number of registered political parties in Nigeria has increased from 19 to 21. The development comes as political activities begin to gather momentum ahead of the next general elections.

INEC reiterated its commitment to ensuring fairness, transparency, and equal opportunities for all political parties, noting that certificates of registration would be issued to the newly registered parties in due course.
