Insurgents storm Jakana military base in Borno State; tanks and ammunition reportedly seized, death toll yet to be confirmed

Several Nigerian soldiers are feared dead following a Boko Haram attack on a military base in Jakana, Kaga Local Government Area of Borno State, on Friday, February 6, 2026. Local sources reported that insurgents stormed the base, firing in all directions and using explosives to overwhelm the soldiers.

Eyewitnesses said military vehicles and armored tanks were destroyed, and ammunition was seized by the attackers. Many soldiers reportedly fled into nearby bush areas, while some of the casualties’ bodies were transferred to the 7 Division Military Hospital in Maiduguri for identification.

The Nigerian military has not yet released official figures, but residents described the incident as chaotic, highlighting the persistent threat Boko Haram poses to security forces in the northeast. This attack adds to a series of assaults on both military and civilian targets in Borno and neighboring states, demonstrating the ongoing challenges of combating Boko Haram and affiliated groups like ISWAP.

Authorities are urging increased vigilance and reinforced security measures in the region to prevent further casualties.
