Benjamin-Kalu

The House of Representatives has taken the first step towards establishing the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal University of Nigerian Languages, following the passage of a bill for its first reading. Sponsored by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and eight others, the bill aims to promote the learning and preservation of Nigerian languages.

The proposed university would offer diplomas, undergraduate, and postgraduate degrees, with a focus on fostering proficiency in Nigerian languages and their application for national development.

The institution would also engage in research and innovation, aiming to serve as a catalyst for effective utilization of Nigeria’s natural and human resources. Furthermore, it would collaborate with other institutions for the advancement of Nigerian languages and cultures.

Key mandates of the university include training professionals in Nigerian languages, providing consultancy services, conducting research, and offering outreach programs.

The President of Nigeria would serve as the visitor to the university and would have the authority to conduct visitations and remove council members, excluding the pro-chancellor and vice-chancellor, if necessary.

The bill is expected to move to its second reading, followed by a public hearing to gather input from stakeholders.
