President requests Senate approval to fund major road project aimed at boosting connectivity and economic growth across Nigeria

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally approached the Nigerian Senate seeking approval for a $516 million external loan to finance the proposed Sokoto–Badagry superhighway.

The request is part of the administration’s broader infrastructure development agenda, with the superhighway expected to stretch across key regions, linking the northern city of Sokoto to Badagry in the southwest. The project is seen as a strategic corridor that could significantly improve transportation, trade, and regional integration.

According to government sources, the highway is designed to ease the movement of goods and people across multiple states, reduce travel time, and open up economic opportunities along the route. It is also expected to enhance access to markets for farmers and businesses while supporting national security logistics.

The loan request will now be reviewed by lawmakers, who are expected to assess its terms, feasibility, and potential impact on Nigeria’s debt profile before granting approval.
