FCT Minister says security reports have linked motorcycles to criminal activities as authorities consider restricting commercial motorcycles and tricycles within Abuja’s city centre.
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has disclosed that the FCT Administration is considering banning the operations of commercial motorcycles (Okada) and tricycles (Keke Napep) within the Abuja city centre as part of measures to tackle rising security concerns.
Speaking during his monthly media chat on Tuesday, Wike said the decision was informed by recommendations from the FCT Security Council following intelligence reports linking the use of motorcycles to criminal activities in parts of the capital.
According to the minister, security agencies have been directed to identify specific areas within the city centre where the restrictions should be enforced. He explained that while imposing a total ban across the entire Federal Capital Territory may not be practical due to transportation needs, restricting their operations in key parts of the city is necessary to improve public safety.
Wike also revealed that additional logistics have been approved for security agencies to strengthen surveillance and enforcement. He noted that motorcycles are increasingly being used by criminals to evade security operatives and carry out unlawful activities.
The minister further addressed the persistent presence of beggars and destitute persons in Abuja, stating that despite repeated evacuation exercises, many return shortly after. He attributed the challenge to Abuja’s strategic location and its accessibility from neighbouring states, assuring residents that the administration remains committed to enhancing security and maintaining order across the nation’s capital.
