University workers threaten indefinite strike if outstanding payments are not settled
The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has given the Federal Government a 14-day ultimatum to settle outstanding salary arrears and address unresolved issues surrounding the implementation of its 2026 agreement with the union.
The association warned that failure to meet its demands within the stipulated period could result in an indefinite strike across Nigerian universities.
SSANU National President, Mohammed Ibrahim, disclosed the union’s position following its 56th National Executive Council meeting held at the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, between September 30 and October 1, 2026.
The union is demanding the payment of arrears arising from the implementation of the 2026 CONTTA salary structure, which took effect from January 1, 2026.
SSANU also renewed its demand for the payment of two months’ salaries withheld during the 2022 industrial action, alongside outstanding arrears associated with the 25 per cent and 35 per cent salary increases.
According to the association, the implementation of the 2026 Federal Government of Nigeria/SSANU agreement has not been uniform across the university system, with some institutions still facing delays in meeting the agreed terms.
The union also raised concerns over the implementation of the agreement in state-owned universities, urging relevant authorities and governing councils to ensure that affected workers receive their entitlements.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, reportedly assured SSANU that the Federal Government was working towards releasing funds to address the outstanding payments.
SSANU said the government’s prompt action within the 14-day period could prevent the proposed industrial action.
The development comes amid continuing concerns over the welfare of university workers and the implementation of agreements reached between the Federal Government and unions in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.
