Chairman says widespread vandalism has plunged communities into prolonged darkness, appeals for urgent intervention to restore power.
The Chairman of Abaji Area Council, Hon. Abubakar Umar Abdullahi, has disclosed that the council requires about ₦600 million to restore electricity infrastructure destroyed by vandals across the area council.
The chairman made the disclosure while speaking on the prolonged power outage affecting several communities, explaining that extensive vandalism of electricity installations has left residents and businesses without power for an extended period.
He said the council lacks the financial capacity to undertake the massive rehabilitation alone, noting that replacing vandalised transformers, high-tension cables and other critical electricity infrastructure would cost approximately ₦600 million.
Abdullahi appealed to the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), the Federal Government and other relevant stakeholders to urgently intervene and provide the necessary funds to restore electricity to the affected communities.
He further stressed the need for enhanced security around power installations to curb the recurring incidents of vandalism, warning that continued attacks on electricity infrastructure would undermine efforts to improve power supply and economic activities in the area.
The council chairman reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring the restoration of electricity and improving the welfare of residents despite the challenges posed by the widespread destruction of public infrastructure.
