Bayelsa State has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of its Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Oborawharievwo Ewhrudjakpo, who passed away on Thursday after collapsing in his office.
According to eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. while the deputy governor was attending to official duties. He reportedly slumped without prior signs of illness and was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa, by aides and security personnel. Medical teams at the emergency unit battled to revive him but pronounced him dead shortly after arrival.
Although an official medical report is yet to be released, sources close to the family suggested that the sudden collapse may be connected to a possible cardiac complication, potentially intensified by his busy schedule.
Security operatives cordoned off FMC Yenagoa shortly after the incident, even as top Bayelsa officials and close associates trooped to the hospital to verify the development. Repeated attempts to reach the deputy governor’s media aide, Doubara Atasi, were unsuccessful as at press time.
Senator Ewhrudjakpo, born on September 5, 1965, had served as Bayelsa Deputy Governor since February 14, 2020. Before his election, he represented Bayelsa West in the Senate and was known for his unwavering commitment to public service and grassroots empowerment.
The Bayelsa State Government is expected to issue an official statement soon.
