In a bold move, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council (ONYC) has announced an extension of the ongoing #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest to October 25, with a new phase tagged “Operation Occupy Abuja.”
The group said the extension became necessary following what it described as the federal government’s silence on the continued detention of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, despite several court rulings ordering his release.
According to a statement issued by the group’s National President, the protest will now shift its focus to Abuja, where the youths intend to peacefully occupy strategic government areas until their demand is addressed.
“We have been patient for too long. Justice delayed is justice denied. Starting October 25, we will occupy Abuja peacefully until the voice of our people is heard,” the statement read.
The #FreeNnamdiKanuNow movement has already caused major lockdowns in parts of the South-East, including Umuahia, Enugu, and Onitsha, as residents and traders continue to show solidarity with the detained IPOB leader.
Security agencies have reportedly intensified surveillance around the Federal Capital Territory in anticipation of the planned occupation rally.
