Gunmen Storm ECWA Church in Kogi During Worship Service
Armed gunmen have abducted over 20 worshippers following a violent attack on the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) in Ayetoro Kiri, Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The attack occurred on Sunday morning while a church service was in progress. Witnesses said the assailants arrived heavily armed, firing sporadic gunshots to scare worshippers before forcefully taking several members away into surrounding bush paths.
Many congregants escaped during the chaos, while others were not as fortunate.
One Worshipper Killed During the Attack
Local sources confirmed that one worshipper was killed during the incident. The victim was identified simply as JayJay.
Residents described the incident as terrifying, saying the attackers operated for several minutes without resistance before fleeing the scene with their captives.
Growing Pattern of Church Attacks in North Central Nigeria
The Kogi church attack adds to a worrying rise in attacks on places of worship across Nigeria’s North Central region, particularly in rural communities where security presence remains weak.
In recent weeks, similar incidents involving mass abductions and killings have been reported in parts of Kwara, Niger, and Benue States, sparking nationwide concern over the safety of worshippers.
Security experts warn that armed groups continue to exploit remote terrain and inadequate policing to carry out attacks with ease.
Calls for Urgent Government and Security Intervention
Following the Kogi attack, residents and community leaders have renewed calls on the federal and state governments to urgently strengthen security in vulnerable rural areas.
They are demanding increased patrols, intelligence-driven operations, and rapid response units to protect lives and prevent further attacks on churches and other public spaces.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies are yet to release an official statement on rescue efforts or arrests connected to the incident.
