Senate President Godswill Akpabio has reportedly been hospitalised in London, United

Abuja, Nigeria — Senate President Godswill Akpabio has reportedly been hospitalised in London, United Kingdom, after allegedly collapsing, a development that caused him to miss a crucial budget session of the National Assembly, according to Sahara Reporters.

Sources cited by the online investigative platform revealed that Akpabio was said to have collapsed on December 10 and was subsequently flown to London aboard a private jet for urgent medical attention. He is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in the UK.

As a result of his reported health condition, the Senate President was absent from an important session deliberating on the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) — a key document guiding Nigeria’s national budget process. His absence was reportedly covered by Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi, who presided over the proceedings on his behalf.

Sahara Reporters further claimed that this was not the first time Akpabio had been taken abroad for medical care, with sources alleging that medical experts have advised him to significantly reduce his workload. Some insiders reportedly suggested that the Senate President may need to consider stepping aside if his health challenges persist.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official statement from the Presidency, the National Assembly, or Akpabio’s media aides confirming or denying the hospitalisation.

The development has sparked fresh public debate over the frequent overseas medical trips by top Nigerian government officials, despite the country’s ongoing struggles with underfunded healthcare infrastructure.

More details are expected as the situation unfolds.
