CAF Suspends Cameroon FA President Samuel Eto’o Over AFCON Misconduct

CAF Decision Follows Heated Confrontation After Cameroon’s AFCON Quarterfinal Exit

Abuja, Nigeria — The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has handed a four-match suspension to Samuel Eto’o, President of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT), following what it described as misconduct during the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

CAF announced the decision on Wednesday, stating that the former Barcelona and Inter Milan striker violated the organisation’s disciplinary code after a heated incident during Cameroon’s quarterfinal clash against host nation Morocco, which ended in a 2–0 defeat for the Indomitable Lion

According to reports, Eto’o was involved in an angry confrontation over refereeing decisions shortly after the match, allegedly directing complaints toward match officials and CAF leadership in the VIP section of the stadium.

CAF’s Disciplinary Board ruled that Eto’o’s actions fell short of the expected standards of conduct for football administrators, especially given his high-profile role within African football governance

The four-match ban means Eto’o will be barred from attending official CAF matches involving Cameroon teams during the suspension period. CAF also imposed a financial fine, further underlining the seriousness of the offence.

The sanction comes as a major development in the tournament, as Eto’o remains one of the most influential and outspoken figures in African football administration.

In reaction, the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) rejected CAF’s decision, describing it as unjust and lacking sufficient explanation. The federation reaffirmed its full support for Eto’o and confirmed plans to challenge the suspension through an appeal.

Football analysts say the case could further strain relations between FECAFOOT and CAF, especially amid ongoing debates around refereeing standards and governance transparency in African football.

The incident has reignited discussions around refereeing controversies at AFCON, with several teams and officials previously expressing concerns over officiating decisions during the tournament.

As the competition progresses, all eyes will be on CAF’s next steps and whether Eto’o’s appeal will alter the disciplinary outcome.
