Defence Minister Badaru Abubakar Resigns
Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has stepped down from office with immediate effect. This development was confirmed in an official State House press release signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
According to the release, Badaru submitted his resignation in a letter dated December 1, 2025, addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating that he was leaving his position on health grounds.
President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and commended Badaru Abubakar for his dedicated service to the nation’s defence sector during a pivotal time.
Tinubu to Announce New Defence Minister Soon
The Presidency noted that President Tinubu is expected to inform the Senate of Badaru’s successor within the week. With the defence portfolio being critical to national stability, the transition is expected to be handled swiftly.
Badaru Abubakar, aged 63, served as a two-term governor of Jigawa State (2015–2023) before his appointment as Minister of Defence on August 21, 2023.
Resignation Comes Amid National Defence Emergency
His resignation coincides with President Tinubu’s ongoing national security and defence emergency declaration, under which the government intends to roll out new strategic directives to tackle insecurity.The State House assured Nigerians that the administration remains committed to strengthening the country’s defence architecture and ensuring continuity within the ministry.
