Enugu, Nigeria – December 15, 2025 – Tensions continue to escalate in Mburubu community, Nkanu East Local Government Area, as a prominent community leader, Hon. Egbo Obinna Stephen, alleges he narrowly escaped an assassination attempt amid the ongoing traditional leadership dispute.
According to Stephen, armed assailants attacked his residence multiple times, allegedly sent to eliminate him due to his support for a contender in the long-standing Igwe leadership contest. He claims the attacks occurred late at night, causing property damage and forcing him to temporarily flee for safety.
Stephen has accused Enugu State Commissioner for Science and Technology, Prince Lawrence Ezeh, of sponsoring the hoodlums to intimidate residents and influence the leadership process. The commissioner, however, has denied these allegations through his media office.
This incident highlights the growing concern over community violence and insecurity linked to political and traditional leadership disputes in Enugu State. Local youth groups and stakeholders have called on Governor Peter Mbah to intervene, restore peace, and ensure the safety of residents.
Experts warn that without timely government action, such disputes risk escalating into more severe community unrest. Residents continue to live in fear as the leadership crisis deepens.
