On July 11, 2024, a Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the remand of former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, in Kuje prison. This decision came after Mamman was arraigned on charges of money laundering amounting to N22 billion. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has accused Mamman of conspiring with ministry staff to divert funds meant for the Zungeru and Mambilla Hydro Electric Power projects (nairametrics) (punchng).
Mamman, who served under President Muhammadu Buhari from 2019 to 2021, pleaded not guilty to the 12-count charge. His defense team, led by Femi Ate (SAN), filed a bail application, but the court noted that the application was not yet in its file. Consequently, the hearing for the bail application has been scheduled for July 12, 2024 (thecable).
The EFCC’s investigation has revealed properties linked to Mamman and his associates both in Nigeria and abroad, alongside significant cash recoveries in naira and US dollars (nairametrics) (punchng) (thecable). Mamman’s legal team emphasized his ill health while arguing for bail, which will be considered in the upcoming hearing (punchng) (thecable).
