FCT Traditional Rulers and Their Classes by Area Council After Wike’s Promotion

Breakdown of traditional chiefs across the Federal Capital Territory following the promotion of rulers announced by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike

The Minister of the FCT has announced a major elevation of traditional rulers across the territory, promoting several chiefs to higher classes in a move aimed at strengthening traditional institutions.

The development, which was made known during an engagement in Abaji, has been widely welcomed across communities in the FCT, as many traditional leaders received new recognition and status.

Following the announcement, below is the current classification of rulers across the six Area Councils in the Federal Capital Territory.

Gwagwalada Area Council

Gwagwalada Chiefdom

• Aguma of Gwagwalada — 1st Class

Zuba Chiefdom

• Agora of Zuba — 2nd Class

Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC)

Jiwa Chiefdom

• Agaba of Jiwa — 2nd Class

Garki Chiefdom

• Sa Peyi of Garki — 2nd Class

Karu Chiefdom

• Sa Karuyi of Karu — 1st Class

Karshi Chiefdom

• Sarki of Karshi — 1st Class

Kuje Area Council

Kuje Chiefdom

• Gomo of Kuje — 1st Class

Rubochi Chiefdom

• Sa Rubochiyi of Rubochi — 2nd Class

Gwargwada Chiefdom

• Agabe of Ugbada (Gwargwada) — 2nd Class

The promotion by the minister of FCT is seen as a historic restructuring of the traditional leadership hierarchy in the , aimed at giving greater recognition to indigenous institutions and strengthening their role in community governance and development.

Many community stakeholders have described the move as a significant step toward inclusiveness and respect for traditional authorities within Nigeria’s capital territory.
