Federal Government to begin payments in November 2026 as peculiar allowance arrears are scheduled for settlement, while minimum wage negotiations remain unresolved.
ABUJA — The Federal Government has approved a monthly transport intervention of ₦70,000 for public service workers across all levels for six months, beginning in November 2026, to cushion the impact of rising living costs.
The approval was one of the resolutions reached at a conciliation meeting between the Federal Government and the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abuja on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, following renewed pressure from organised labour over workers’ welfare, the rising cost of living and outstanding agreements.
The agreement is expected to provide temporary financial relief to public service workers amid growing concerns over the cost of transportation and other essential expenses.
The government also approved the payment of peculiar allowance arrears effective May 1, 2026. The arrears are to be paid in three equal monthly instalments, beginning in November 2026.
However, the Federal Government and the NLC did not reach an agreement on the effective date for implementing the national minimum wage review.
Despite the disagreement, both parties agreed that the Minimum Wage Negotiation Committee would be constituted and commence meetings immediately to facilitate further discussions on the matter.
The outcome of the meeting underscores the continuing negotiations between the government and organised labour over improved remuneration, workers’ welfare and measures to ease the economic pressure on Nigerian workers.
The approved transport intervention is scheduled to run for six months, beginning in November 2026. However, the announcement of the agreement does not in itself confirm that payments have commenced.
