Firefighters Withdraw From Minna Petrol Tanker Inferno Over Lack Of Water, Chemicals

Emergency responders cite lack of water and chemicals as raging tanker fire erupts near key government facilities in Minna, Niger State

Firefighters from both the Federal and Niger State fire services have withdrawn from the scene of a burning petrol-laden tanker in Minna, Niger State, citing a lack of adequate water supply and specialised firefighting chemicals needed to contain the inferno.

The incident occurred along the Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe Western Bypass near Mandela Junction, close to key government facilities including the Niger State House of Assembly and the National Examinations Council (NECO) headquarters. The tanker, reportedly transporting Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) from an NNPC Mega Station, overturned, spilled its contents and later caught fire, causing panic among residents and motorists in the area.

Emergency responders initially arrived at the scene but were forced to pull out due to the intensity of the blaze, explaining that the absence of sufficient water and appropriate chemical agents made it unsafe to continue firefighting operations.

The tanker driver was said to have sustained partial injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. As of the time of reporting, the cause of the fire had not been officially confirmed, while authorities were making efforts to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby structures and fuel residues.

The incident has once again raised concerns over fire response capacity, emergency preparedness and water infrastructure in Niger State and other parts of the country.
