Gabon Bans Aubameyang, Suspends National Team, Sacks Coaches After Shocking AFCON Exit

The Gabonese government has taken drastic measures against its national football team following a humiliating exit from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), banning star forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, suspending the national team, and dismissing the entire coaching crew.

The decision was announced after Gabon finished bottom of their group, losing all three matches at the tournament, a performance government officials described as dishonourable and unacceptable.

Aubameyang, Other Senior Players Banned

Among those sanctioned is Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Gabon’s all-time leading goal scorer and most prominent football figure. Veteran defender and former captain Bruno Ecuele Manga was also barred from future national team duties.

The government accused senior players of poor leadership and lack of commitment, arguing that their presence no longer inspires confidence or discipline within the squad.

National Team Suspended Indefinitely

In an unprecedented move, Gabon’s national football team has been suspended indefinitely, pending a complete restructuring of the country’s football system. All technical and administrative staff have also been relieved of their duties.

Gabon’s Sports Minister described the AFCON outing as a national embarrassment, stating that urgent reforms were needed to restore pride and professionalism in the country’s football.

Government Cites National Image

President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema reportedly endorsed the sweeping sanctions, noting that the team’s poor showing had damaged Gabon’s image on the continental stage and undermined national unity.

According to the government, football remains a symbol of national identity, and failure at such a level cannot be treated lightly.

FIFA Rules Raise Concerns

The intervention has sparked concerns within football circles, as FIFA regulations strictly prohibit government interference in football administration. Analysts warn that Gabon could face international sanctions or suspension if FIFA deems the actions a violation of its statutes.

Mixed Reactions Trail Decision

While some Gabonese citizens have welcomed the tough stance as necessary discipline, others argue that structural issues, not individual players, are responsible for the team’s decline.

Aubameyang has since hinted on social media that deeper administrative problems exist within Gabonese football, beyond the actions of players alone.

What Next for Gabon Football?

The future of Gabon’s national team remains uncertain as reforms begin. Observers say the country must tread carefully to avoid FIFA penalties while addressing long-standing governance and development challenges.
