House of Reps Calls on Federal Government to Reverse Petrol and Cooking Gas Price Hike

The House of Representatives has called on the federal government to reverse the recent hike in petrol and cooking gas prices.

This resolution was passed during a plenary session following a motion co-sponsored by minority leader Kingsley Chinda, deputy minority leader Aliyu Madaki, and 109 other lawmakers.

Madaki highlighted that the removal of fuel subsidy, global oil price volatility, and the naira’s depreciation have significantly contributed to rising petrol and gas prices. He emphasized that these increases are worsening financial hardships for Nigerians, particularly affecting transportation, food prices, and healthcare costs.

He warned that unless addressed, the situation could lead to severe economic and social crises.

Despite opposition from some lawmakers like Sada Soli, who argued that a joint committee was already investigating the issue, the motion was adopted after extensive debate.

The House urged the government to implement measures like temporary price relief, tax reductions, or subsidies on LPG for low-income households and to expedite the repair of domestic refineries.

They also called on the Central Bank of Nigeria to introduce monetary policies to counteract the inflationary effects of the fuel price hikes.
