Islamic Cleric Suspended in Yobe After Saying Governors Fear Tinubu More Than Allah

JIBWIS Suspends Sheikh Alkali Abubakar Ahead of Ramadan Sermon Amid Controversial Political Remarks

In a controversial move, Sheikh Alkali Abubakar Salihu Zaria has been suspended from delivering his Ramadan sermon in Damaturu, Yobe State, by the leadership of Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa Iqamatis Sunnah (JIBWIS).

The suspension followed remarks made by Sheikh Alkali during a Tafseer session at Mokas Mosque, where he claimed that state governors fear President Bola Tinubu more than Allah, criticizing political leaders for prioritizing power over accountability and the welfare of citizens.

The JIBWIS Council of Ulama, led by Sheikh Muhammad Sani Yahaya Jingir, stated that the cleric’s comments were politically charged and violated organizational guidelines, which seek to keep religious sermons free from partisan politics.

The incident has generated mixed reactions nationwide. Some supporters commend Sheikh Alkali for speaking out on governance and insecurity challenges in Northern Nigeria, while others insist that mosques should remain apolitical spaces focused solely on spiritual guidance.

Sheikh Alkali has responded calmly, asking followers not to protest and reaffirming his respect for the council’s decision.

This event highlights the ongoing tension between religious leadership and political discourse in Nigeria, particularly during Ramadan, when sermons hold significant influence over large audiences.
