Kano, Nigeria — Tragedy struck in Kano State on Monday morning as a respected Islamic cleric, Ladan Zubairu, was brutally murdered while observing morning prayers at a mosque in Maraba Quarters, SaharaReporters has learned.
The elderly cleric was reportedly attacked at the Yusuf Garko Mosque shortly after completing the first call to prayer (Adhan) and while preparing for the second. Witnesses said an assailant entered the mosque and slashed the cleric’s throat, killing him instantly.
The shocking attack triggered outrage in the community, as local youths allegedly pursued the suspect while he attempted to flee. Reports indicate that the suspect was lynched by an angry mob, while his residence was also set ablaze during the unrest that followed the killing.
Sources disclosed that the suspect was later found with a nylon bag containing the severed throat of the cleric, further heightening tension in the area.
The Kano State Police Command has since confirmed the incident, stating that officers were swiftly deployed to restore calm and prevent further violence. The police said both bodies were recovered and deposited at a hospital morgue for autopsy.
The Commissioner of Police has ordered a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killing and the subsequent mob action, warning residents against taking the law into their own hands.
Security authorities also appealed to the public to remain calm and cooperate with ongoing investigations, assuring that those responsible would be brought to justice.
The killing has sparked widespread condemnation, with residents describing the attack as a grave violation of religious sanctity and public safety.
