Unprecedented division in Kano sees three parallel Eid congregations, exposing royal dispute and political tensions

An unusual and historic scene unfolded in during this year’s Eid celebrations as three influential figures — , , and — led separate Eid prayers in different parts of the state.

The development marks the first time Kano has witnessed multiple Eid congregations led by prominent leaders, underscoring the deepening crisis within the Kano Emirate and the broader political landscape.

Sanusi II, recently reinstated as the 16th Emir of Kano, led prayers alongside his loyalists, reinforcing his claim and influence amid ongoing legal and political battles. In contrast, Aminu Ado Bayero, who still retains a strong support base despite his controversial removal, conducted a separate Eid prayer, further highlighting the unresolved leadership tussle.

Adding a political twist, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso also held his own Eid gathering with supporters, signaling the strong political undertones shaping the crisis.

The parallel celebrations reflect the widening divide between traditional authority and political interests in Kano. Analysts say the situation goes beyond a royal dispute, pointing to a complex struggle involving governance, loyalty, and influence.

Residents have expressed concern over the growing fragmentation, with many calling for peace, unity, and a lasting resolution to the emirate crisis. As events continue to unfold, stakeholders face increasing pressure to find common ground and restore stability to one of Northern Nigeria’s most influential traditional institutions.
