Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State made a significant announcement on Tuesday, July 2, during the orientation ceremony for Batch B, Stream 1 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members at the temporary camp in Paikoro. He generously awarded each of the 1,600 corps members with a N200,000 bonus, eliciting loud cheers and applause from the recipients.
The governor’s gesture aimed to encourage corps members to serve diligently in Niger State by ensuring their comfort and highlighting the state’s prosperity. He also pledged to enhance camp facilities with more toilets and boreholes, and provided essentials like cows and rice for their welfare during their stay.
Governor Bago further announced a N5 billion investment to establish a new NYSC camp, underscoring his commitment to improving the NYSC program in the state. He emphasized opportunities in agriculture, suggesting corps members could earn up to N500,000 monthly by venturing into this sector. Additionally, he promised automatic employment for those specializing in medical and health fields.
Dr. Jamila Bio Ibrahim, the Minister of Youth Development, commended Governor Bago’s initiative and outlined federal plans to empower NYSC members nationwide through entrepreneurial ventures and skills training programs. She stressed the importance of the corps members’ service year in building a solid foundation for their future careers.
The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps praised Governor Bago’s generosity, urging other governors to emulate Niger State’s example. He reassured corps members of their safety and security while serving in Niger State, urging them to seize the opportunities provided.
