The landmark agreement with Italian defence firm Leonardo marks Nigeria’s largest military aircraft investment, aimed at boosting airpower and security operations.
Nigeria is set to acquire 24 M-346FA fighter jets from Italian aerospace and defence giant Leonardo S.p.A. in a landmark deal worth €1.2 billion, making it the biggest single military aircraft purchase in West Africa.
According to Sahara Reporters, the agreement forms part of a major effort by the Nigerian government to strengthen the country’s air combat capability amid ongoing security challenges across regions affected by insurgency, terrorism, and armed banditry.
The M-346FA aircraft, originally designed as advanced training jets, come fitted with full combat capabilities including air-to-ground strike systems, tactical reconnaissance features, and close air support functions. The deal also includes long-term maintenance, training arrangements, and technical support.
Defence analysts note that the jets are expected to significantly enhance the Nigerian Air Force’s operational strength and capacity to tackle emerging threats. The acquisition aligns with ongoing military modernisation plans, which have intensified in recent years.
Delivery of the aircraft is expected to take place in batches beginning from late 2025, with full deployment projected by mid-2026.
The historic defence investment comes as Nigeria continues to prioritise national security infrastructure, with the Air Force positioned to play a crucial role in regional stability and counterinsurgency operations.
