Troops foil cross-border pirate attack, rescue victims including infants along Nigeria–Cameroon waterway

According to the Army, the incident occurred on Saturday, January 11, 2026, when armed pirates intercepted a passenger boat travelling from Nigeria towards Cameroon along a notorious waterway frequently targeted by criminal gangs.

Security sources disclosed that troops of the 13 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, stationed at Ikang in Cross River State, responded swiftly after receiving a distress call from the victims.

The soldiers immediately mobilised and pursued the pirates, leading to a brief exchange of gunfire. During the operation, one of the pirates’ speedboats reportedly capsized, forcing the assailants to abandon the hijacked vessel and flee into surrounding creeks

The Army confirmed that all 18 passengers were rescued unharmed, with no casualties recorded during the operation. The rescued victims were later escorted to safety and provided with necessary assistance.

Commander of the 13 Brigade, Brigadier General P.O. Alimikhena, praised the troops for their professionalism and bravery, reaffirming the Nigerian Army’s commitment to securing border communities and maritime routes.

Brigadier General Alimikhena also urged residents of coastal and riverine communities to continue cooperating with security agencies by providing timely and credible intelligence to help combat piracy and other forms of maritime crime.

Pirate attacks and armed robberies at sea remain a major security concern along the Gulf of Guinea, particularly within border waterways connecting Nigeria and neighbouring countries. Security experts say sustained military operations and regional cooperation are critical to curbing the menace.

The latest rescue operation underscores ongoing efforts by Nigerian security forces to safeguard lives, protect economic activities, and ensure safe navigation along the nation’s waterways.
