KATSINA, NIGERIA – A shocking revelation has surfaced about Nigerian Customs officers who reportedly offered several bags of seized rice to armed bandits in order to secure their safety during an encounter in Katsina State.
According to reports widely circulated by national media, the incident occurred along a smuggling route in the Dutsin-Ma Local Government Area.
The officers, attached to the Joint Border Patrol Team (Sector 4 Command) in the North-West, were said to have seized 37 bags of smuggled rice before being confronted by heavily armed bandits.
Comptroller Aliyu Mohammed, who coordinated the patrol team, disclosed that the bandits demanded seven bags of rice as a condition for allowing the officers to leave unharmed. Faced with imminent danger, the officers reportedly surrendered part of the seized goods to ensure their safety.
Mohammed described the decision as a matter of life and death, explaining that the operatives had no option but to yield to the demand in the face of superior firepower. He also lamented the lack of support from some local communities who allegedly aid smugglers and obstruct Customs operations in the area.
Security analysts have since raised concerns over the implications of such actions, warning that negotiating with bandits, even under duress, could embolden criminal groups operating across the North-West.
The incident underscores the persistent insecurity along Nigeria’s border corridors and highlights the dangers faced by law enforcement personnel combating smuggling and banditry in remote areas.
