Shuaibu Yusuf, a man from Borno State, Nigeria, climbed a radio mast in Abuja today morning in an attempt to commit suicide. He cited bad governance in Nigeria as the reason for his drastic decision. The incident, which occurred on a Monday morning, ended with Yusuf being rescued by the Fire Service, National Emergency Management Agency, and Federal Capital Territory officials.
Before climbing the mast, Yusuf left behind a suicide note explaining his decision. He expressed his willingness to sacrifice his life to draw attention to the nation’s critical issues. His demands included the restoration of fuel subsidies, a state of emergency on insecurity, and immediate government action to combat terrorism in Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, Niger, and Borno states. Additionally, he called for the reopening of borders for food importation to address the food shortage crisis and urged the government to tackle the problem of out-of-school children.
Yusuf’s suicide attempt highlights the growing desperation among Nigerians facing economic challenges and hardships attributed to the policies of President Bola Tinubu. This incident is not isolated, as evidenced by a recent case where an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) operative committed suicide at his residence in Abuja. The EFCC, describing the deceased as a diligent and efficient member of Course 5, has launched an investigation into the factors leading to his death.
These events underscore the severe impact of Nigeria’s current economic and governance issues on its citizens’ mental health and well-being.
