President Tinubu Appoints First Female Director-General of Nigerian Law School

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Dr. Olugbemisola Titilayo Odusote as the first female Director-General of the Nigerian Law School (NLS), marking a historic milestone in Nigeria’s legal education sector.

The appointment, confirmed on Tuesday, will take effect from January 10, 2026, following the expiration of the tenure of the outgoing Director-General, Professor Isa Hayatu Chiroma, who has served in the role for eight years.

Historic Milestone for Legal Education in Nigeria

Dr. Odusote’s appointment makes her the first woman to lead the Nigerian Law School since its establishment in 1962, breaking a long-standing gender barrier in one of Nigeria’s most influential legal institutions.

The development has been widely described by stakeholders as a major step toward gender inclusion and institutional reform within the Nigerian legal system.

Dr. Odusote, aged 54, currently serves as the Deputy Director-General and Head of the Lagos Campus of the Nigerian Law School, one of the school’s largest and busiest campuses.

She holds:

  • An LL.B degree from Obafemi Awolowo University
  • An LL.M in Company and Commercial Law
  • A PhD in Law from the University of Surrey, United Kingdom, with a specialization in public law and administration of justice

Called to the Nigerian Bar in 1988, Dr. Odusote joined the Nigerian Law School in 2001 and has held several strategic positions, including Director of Academics and Head of Academic Department.

As Director-General, Dr. Odusote will oversee:

  • Academic and professional training of law graduates
  • Administration of all Nigerian Law School campuses nationwide
  • Policy coordination with the Council of Legal Education, Body of Benchers, and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA)

Her four-year tenure is expected to focus on institutional reforms, academic excellence, and modernization of legal training in Nigeria.

Legal practitioners and education stakeholders have welcomed the appointment, describing it as a bold and progressive decision by the Tinubu administration.

Analysts say the move reflects the federal government’s commitment to merit-based appointments and increased female representation in leadership positions

President Tinubu’s appointment of Dr. Olugbemisola Odusote as the first female DG of the Nigerian Law School represents a defining moment in Nigeria’s legal history and sets a new standard for inclusive leadership in the country’s justice system.
