The House of Representatives in Nigeria is pushing for disciplinary action against Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and six Area Council Chairmen due to their alleged insubordination and failure to appear before the House Committee on FCT Area Councils and Ancillary Matters.
During a committee meeting in Abuja, Ikonne Ifeanyi, a committee member, expressed frustration over the officials’ refusal to honor invitations to appear before the House. He described their behavior as disrespectful and proposed that the House should no longer approve any matters concerning the minister and the council chairmen. Ifeanyi suggested that the president should be advised to remove Wike as the FCT minister.
Fredrick Agbedi, the committee chairman, criticized the officials for neglecting their constitutional duties and failing to complete or inaugurate any projects despite receiving significant monthly allocations. He emphasized the importance of the committee’s oversight role in ensuring accountability and good governance.
Rep. Adesola Adebayo supported the call for strict measures, stating that the council chairmen’s refusal to appear was a blatant disrespect to the House. He urged for maximum pressure to ensure accountability.
Some members, like Nurudeen Abbas, suggested giving the officials one final chance to comply before implementing sanctions. The committee concluded with a proposal to enter a closed session for further discussion on the matter.
