The Rwandan government has recently shut down over 5,600 churches, including 100 cave churches, due to non-compliance with safety and health regulations.
This action is part of a nationwide operation led by the Rwanda Governance Board (RGB) and is aimed at ensuring places of worship meet basic infrastructure, hygiene, and safety standards.
The government emphasized that worship should not compromise the safety of worshippers, highlighting the law enacted in 2018 that mandates a safe and organized environment for places of worship. President Paul Kagame has supported this crackdown, citing the need for fewer, but safer, places of worship in the country.
