The Nigerian Senate has decided to step down two concurrence bills aimed at establishing the Nigerian Forest Security Service and the Nigerian Port Economic Regulatory Agency.
These bills had successfully passed their second reading in the House of Representatives.
In his lead debate, Senate Leader Michael Opeyemi explained that the proposed Forest Security Service was intended to combat crimes within Nigeria’s forests, while the Port Regulatory Agency was meant to oversee the economic regulation of port operations and services.
However, some senators expressed concerns about the objectives of the bills, suggesting that the establishment of these agencies could lead to duplication of functions already handled by existing security and regulatory bodies.
Their concerns prompted the Senate to step down the bills for now, as the lawmakers emphasized the need for efficiency and synergy among existing agencies rather than creating new ones.
