The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has urged the Federal Government of Nigeria to introduce stronger social media regulations, warning that the unchecked misuse of online platforms threatens national peace, unity, and mutual respect.
Speaking through the Emir of Zazzau, Ambassador Ahmad Nuhu Bamalli, at the *Northern Ulamah Summit on Insecurity and Socioeconomic Challenges held in Kaduna, the Sultan expressed concern that social media has become a tool for disrespect, misinformation, and division.
“Anyone can wake up, pick up their phone, and insult a respected leader, neighbour, or even a family member without facing any consequences,” he lamented.
He called for Nigeria to emulate other nations where offensive or inciting posts are tracked and punished, to curb hate speech and online abuses.
The summit, organised by the Congregation of Northern Ulamas, brought together Islamic clerics, political leaders, and stakeholders across northern Nigeria to discuss insecurity, religious harmony, and the role of scholars in national development.
