Three members of the same family have been confirmed dead following a horrific multi-vehicle crash along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway on Wednesday.
The fatal accident occurred at the Secretariat inward section of Otedola Bridge and involved an Audi, a Toyota Camry and a Toyota Corolla. According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the crash was triggered by a heavily loaded truck that was reportedly speeding when it rammed into one of the cars from behind.
The impact caused the affected vehicle to lose control and collide with the other cars, leading to a chain-reaction crash that instantly claimed the lives of a father, mother and their child, who were travelling together.
Two other persons sustained critical injuries and were rescued from the wreckage by emergency officials before being rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The driver of the speeding truck fled the scene immediately after the incident, abandoning the vehicle and the victims.
A multi-agency team including LASTMA, the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the Lagos Fire and Rescue Service, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) responded to the accident.
LASTMA’s General Manager described the tragedy as “unbearable and irreplaceable,” lamenting the loss of an entire family in a preventable road crash.
The incident adds to a series of recent fatal accidents linked to speeding, mechanical failure and reckless driving on major routes across Lagos.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing, while efforts to locate the fleeing truck driver continue.
