Tragedy struck in Niger State as authorities confirmed that at least 35 people have died and 40 others sustained serious injuries after an overturned petrol tanker exploded while residents were scooping fuel.

The incident occurred in the Agaie Local Government Area, where the tanker reportedly lost control and spilled its content along the road. Witnesses said several villagers rushed to collect the leaking fuel before the explosion occurred.

According to the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), emergency responders and security operatives have since evacuated the victims to nearby hospitals. Many of the injured are said to be in critical condition.
The state government has warned residents against scooping fuel from accident scenes, describing the act as “dangerous and life-threatening.”

Governor Mohammed Umar Bago expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and directed that all victims receive urgent medical attention. He also promised to strengthen public safety awareness to prevent future tragedies.Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
