Community Demands Justice as Police Launch Investigation into Deadly Abuja Shooting
Abuja was thrown into mourning following a tragic shooting incident in Karon Majigi (Karmajiji) community of the Federal Capital Territory, where a Department of State Services (DSS) operative allegedly opened fire on residents, resulting in the death of two persons and leaving one other seriously injured.
Reports indicate that the incident occurred on January 19, 2026, while the victims were said to be going about their lawful activities. One of the victims reportedly died shortly after the shooting, while another later succumbed to injuries at the Federal Medical Centre, Abuja. The third victim is currently receiving medical attention.

Eyewitness accounts and security sources disclosed that a single bullet reportedly struck more than one victim, raising serious concerns about the handling of firearms and the use of force by security operatives within civilian communities in the FCT.
The DSS operative involved has been identified as Ajayi Abayomi. Sources allege that he has failed to honour police invitations for questioning and is currently not reachable, despite claims that the shooting was accidental.

The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed that an investigation is ongoing, as residents of the affected community continue to demand justice and accountability. Human rights advocates have also called for a thorough and transparent investigation to ensure public confidence in security institutions.
As of the time of filing this report, no official statement has been issued by the DSS, and no arrest has been publicly confirmed.
