From Humble Beginnings to a World-Class Institution in the Federal Capital Territory
The University of Abuja marks 38 years of growth and academic excellence. Established in 1988, it has grown from 4 to over 16 faculties, becoming a leading institution in Nigeria
The University of Abuja, the only federal university in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), will turn 38 years old on January 1, 2026. Established in 1988, the university started operations at a temporary site in Wuse, Abuja, before relocating to the Mini Campus, Gwagwalada, where formal academic activities commenced in 1991.
Initially comprising just four faculties, the university has grown steadily to over 16 faculties, most located on the Main Campus along Airport Road. These faculties include:

- Engineering
- Management Sciences
- Social Sciences
- Communication and Media Studies
- Science
- Law
- Veterinary Medicine
- Nursing and Allied Sciences
- Pharmaceutical Sciences
- Environmental Sciences
The College of Health Sciences further strengthens the university’s academic offerings, including the faculties of Basic Medical Sciences, Basic Clinical Sciences, and Clinical Sciences.
