UNIZIK academic Staff Call for Federal Government Intervention as Protesters Decry Hardship and Demand Immediate Payment of Outstanding Salaries

Workers at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) have staged a protest over the non-payment of their salaries, alleging that some staff members have gone unpaid for up to six years. The affected workers, many of whom were reportedly employed around 2019, said the prolonged delay has caused severe financial hardship despite their continued service to the institution.

The protesters accused the university management of failing to properly integrate them into the payroll system, which they believe is responsible for the persistent salary delays. They described the situation as unfair and exploitative, noting that they have continued to carry out academic and administrative duties without receiving their due wages.

Expressing frustration over what they called a lack of urgency from both the institution and relevant authorities, the workers called on the Federal Government to intervene and ensure immediate payment of all outstanding salaries. They also demanded proper documentation and regularization of their employment status to prevent further occurrences.

Some of the protesters warned that the situation could negatively impact academic activities if left unresolved, stressing that staff morale has been significantly affected.

Although the university management has not issued a fresh response to the protest, previous explanations have linked the issue to administrative bottlenecks and delays in federal payroll processes. The workers, however, insist that urgent action must be taken to address their plight and restore normalcy within the institution.
