Abuja, Nigeria — October 7, 2025:
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a smooth leadership transition as Prof. Mahmood Yakubu concludes his 10-year tenure and hands over to Barr. Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu as Acting Chairman.
The handover took place during INEC’s quarterly meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) in Abuja. Yakubu, who began his service in 2015, said his pre-retirement leave aligns with constitutional provisions to ensure continuity.
Agbamuche-Mbu pledged to uphold INEC’s integrity and sustain reforms achieved under Yakubu’s leadership.
The event marked a new chapter for Nigeria’s electoral body, as INEC prepares for upcoming off-cycle elections in Anambra, Ekiti, Osun, and the FCT.
