Court restrains Sahara Reporters from publishing claims of erroneous N100 million transfer to IGP Egbetokun’s son

A Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court has restrained activist Omoyele Sowore and Sahara Reporters from publishing allegations that the son of outgoing Inspector‑General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun received ₦100 million from Anambra State’s security vote by error. The injunction follows a petition by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), which described the claims as defamatory and unverified.

The court has adjourned the matter to April 14, 2026, for further hearing. The NPF stated that repeated publications of unverified allegations about the IGP and his family have prompted multiple legal actions, highlighting the sensitivity of reporting on public officials’ finances.

While Sahara Reporters has reported the alleged transfer, there is currently no independent confirmation from major news outlets or official sources. Legal observers note that the case underscores the importance of caution and verification in reporting financial claims involving government officials.
