The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has unveiled an unexpected list of high-profile Nigerians he plans to call as witnesses in his ongoing treason and terrorism trial.
According to documents reportedly filed before the Federal High Court, Abuja, Kanu’s defense team listed 11 prominent personalities, including current and former government officials, military chiefs, and political leaders.
The witnesses listed include:
Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (rtd) – Former Chief of Army Staff
Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (rtd) – Former Chief of Army Staff
Babajide Sanwo-Olu – Governor of Lagos State
Hope Uzodinma – Governor of Imo State
Nyesom Wike – Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT)
Okezie Ikpeazu – Former Governor of Abia State
Dave Umahi – Minister of Works
Abubakar Malami (SAN) – Former Attorney-General of the Federation
Ahmed Rufai – Immediate Past Director-General, National Intelligence Agency (NIA)
Yusuf Bichi – Former Director-General, Department of State Services (DSS)
Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi – Current DSS Director-General
The move has sparked intense public and political interest, with analysts suggesting that the inclusion of such influential figures could redefine the direction of Kanu’s trial.
Kanu, who has been in detention since his controversial rendition to Nigeria in 2021, is facing charges of treasonable felony and terrorism-related offenses — allegations he has consistently denied.
His legal team argues that the listed witnesses are vital to exposing the circumstances surrounding his arrest, rendition, and prolonged detention, insisting they possess firsthand knowledge of key events linked to his case.
The Federal High Court in Abuja is expected to reconvene soon as the case continues to attract both national and international attention.
