The University of Abuja marks 38 years of growth and academic excellence. Established in 1988, it has grown from 4 to over 16 faculties, becoming a leading institution in Nigeria

The University of Abuja, the only federal university in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), will turn 38 years old on January 1, 2026. Established in 1988, the university started operations at a temporary site in Wuse, before relocating to the Mini Campus, Gwagwalada, where formal academic activities commenced in 1991.

Initially comprising just four faculties, the university has grown steadily to over 16 faculties, most located on the Main Campus along Airport Road. These faculties include:

  • Arts
  • Agriculture
  • Education
  • Engineering
  • Management Sciences
  • Social Sciences
  • Communication and Media Studies
  • Science
  • Law
  • Veterinary Medicine
  • Nursing and Allied Sciences
  • Pharmaceutical Sciences
  • Environmental Sciences

The College of Health Sciences further strengthens the university’s academic offerings, including the faculties of Basic Medical Sciences, Basic Clinical Sciences, and Clinical Sciences.

Over the years, the University of Abuja has become a fast-growing institution committed to excellence in teaching, research, and community service. As it marks 38 years of academic distinction, the university continues its mission to become a world-class institution, shaping the future of education in Nigeria.
