NNPP Dissolves Party Structures In Kano Ahead Of Governor Abba Yusuf’s Planned Defection To APC

NNPP

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has dissolved all its party structures in Kano State, a move widely seen as a strategic response to the reported plan by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The decision, which affects the party’s state, local government and ward executives, was announced by the NNPP National Working Committee (NWC) amid rising political tension in the state.

NNPP Confirms Dissolution of Kano Structures

According to the party leadership, the dissolution was carried out in line with the NNPP constitution, citing the need to protect the party’s interests as uncertainty deepens over Governor Yusuf’s political future.

The NNPP is expected to set up a caretaker committee to temporarily manage party affairs in Kano while consultations and internal resolutions continue.

Yusuf’s Alleged Move To APC Sparks Crisis

Governor Yusuf’s alleged plan to defect has intensified the long-standing rift between him and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the national leader of the NNPP and a former governor of Kano State.

Kwankwaso, who played a major role in Yusuf’s emergence as governor under the NNPP platform, is reportedly opposed to any defection and has warned against abandoning the party.

Meanwhile, APC leaders in Kano have openly hinted that Governor Yusuf is expected to officially join the ruling party, a development that could significantly alter the political balance in the state.

Political Implications For Kano, NNPP

Political analysts say the dissolution of NNPP structures signals a deep internal crisis and could weaken the party’s grassroots presence in Kano if the defection eventually materialises.

Kano remains one of Nigeria’s most politically influential states, and any shift by the sitting governor is expected to have national political consequences, especially ahead of future elections.

As of the time of filing this report, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has not made any official statement confirming or denying the defection rumours.
