Amnesty International Reacts to Southern Kaduna Mob Killing

Amnesty International has strongly condemned the mob killing of a Christian pastor in Southern Kaduna, describing the incident as a grave human rights violation and calling on Nigerian authorities to immediately investigate and prosecute those responsible.

The human rights organization made this known on Tuesday following reports that the pastor was lynched by a mob after being accused of witchcraft in a community in Southern Kaduna, Kaduna State.

In a statement shared via its official social media platforms, Amnesty International Nigeria described the killing as horrific and unlawful, stressing that no accusation — including witchcraft — can justify taking a person’s life.

“This horrific mob killing must be urgently investigated. Those responsible must be brought to justice. Mob violence has no place in a society governed by the rule of law,” Amnesty International stated.

The organization warned that repeated incidents of mob justice across Nigeria reflect systemic failures in law enforcement and a growing culture of impunity.

Amnesty International urged the Kaduna State Government and security agencies to conduct a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation into the killing. It also emphasized the need to protect witnesses and ensure that suspects are prosecuted in accordance with Nigerian law.

According to the group, allowing mob violence to go unpunished encourages further extrajudicial killings and undermines public confidence in the justice system.

The killing adds to a growing list of mob-related deaths in Nigeria, where individuals are often attacked over allegations of theft, blasphemy, witchcraft, or other unverified claims.

Human rights groups have repeatedly warned that delayed justice, weak policing, and lack of accountability are fueling mob actions across several parts of the country, including the North-West and North-Central regions.

As of the time of filing this report, Kaduna State authorities have not released an official statement confirming arrests or outlining steps taken in response to the incident.

Residents and civil society organizations are now calling for stronger security presence, community sensitization, and swift justice to prevent a recurrence of such violence
