FG Agreement boosts lecturers’ pay and welfare, targets lasting peace in public universities

Abuja — The Federal Government (FG) and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have signed a landmark agreement aimed at ending over 17 years of industrial unrest in Nigeria’s public university system.

The agreement, which was finalised in Abuja after prolonged negotiations, introduces a comprehensive overhaul of the remuneration, welfare and working conditions of university academics across the country.

According to details of the deal, the new framework provides for a significant salary increase for lecturers, alongside improved academic allowances, pension benefits and enhanced support for research and professional development.

The FG officials described the agreement as a major breakthrough that addresses long-standing grievances raised by ASUU since the 2009 negotiations, many of which had remained unresolved and repeatedly triggered nationwide strikes.

Under the new arrangement, university lecturers are expected to benefit from a revised Consolidated University Academic Staff Salary Structure (CONUASS), improved earned academic allowances, and better funding for teaching tools, research activities and conference participation.

The deal also includes provisions targeted at strengthening academic autonomy, boosting research output and improving staff morale, while ensuring stability in the university system.

ASUU leaders, who were part of the signing ceremony, expressed cautious optimism, noting that the union would closely monitor implementation to ensure that the terms of the agreement are fully honoured.

Education stakeholders have welcomed the development, describing it as a critical step towards restoring confidence in Nigeria’s higher education sector and reducing disruptions to the academic calendar.

The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to faithful implementation of the agreement, stating that the resolution aligns with ongoing efforts to reposition education as a key driver of national development.
